Although it turned out that Lola’s medication was suppressing her bone marrow and she had to stop taking it, we took our trip anyway. She was stable and we couldn’t start the new meds for a week so there was no reason to cancel.
It was WONDERFUL! The hotel was great and had a beautiful and big pool area. The beach was gorgeous. We had good weather, hot and humid with a little rain and a lot of sun every day.
We spent a lot of time lying by the pool and reading, walking the beach, and swimming in the pool. We consumed a good number of mojitos while gazing out at the waves (but not enough to warrant a hangover). We ate lots of plaintains and discovered the loveliness that is Puerto Rican bread.
We even took the time to do touristy things and went to Old San Juan one afternoon and then had an awesome dinner at one of the restaurants there. Aside from a slight sunburn and some travel issues, everything was great. All in all it was an awesome trip.
The best part was that Brady had a blast with Nonno and Nonna – they went to the train station and the zoo and bought him a tricycle and cooked all of his favorite foods. He loved it. And when he ran up to me screaming “Mommy, Mommy, Mommy, Mommy” with a huge smile on his face I felt much more appreciative of it than I had before we left. Absence really does make the heart grow fonder. And it helps you forget how whiny your 2.5-year-old can be too!
